I was too young to go to Woodstock or be a hippie, so I enviously watched the 60s unfold from a BW television set in suburban NJ. Teenagers drove around town in convertibles listening to WABC’s Cousin Brucie blast the Beach Boys and I went to sleep listening to WNEW’s Nightbird Allison Steele broadcast the latest that FM radio was playing.
My growing music collection of 45 records neatly stored in my red and white zebra box with a plastic handle soon expanded with albums and 8 track tapes. Soon we were creating playlists on cassettes. Album cover art at 12x12” was cool, classic, sometimes psychedelic and always hip.
Landing in the East Village in 1980 turned out to be the best place a young music photographer could be. Little did anyone know then how much musical talent would travel through this tiny neighborhood for years on end, making us dance, sing along and scream for more…
